DANGER!

DO NOT JOIN NEW YORK SPORTS CLUB!

My friend was sexually harassed and nearly assaulted by someone who works at the 23rd and Park location. This guy threatened her with bodily harm after giving her trouble about finding her name in the computer. She got mad and said, how dare you threaten me, but this guy somehow got her banned from the club because she threw a plastic sign, or rather kind of tossed it. She called the cops on him and he pressed charges against her. My friend is innocent and not dangerous HE is the dangerous one. At another location, the people working there told my friend that NYSC hires people basically off the street to work there and doesn't check their backgrounds, and this same worker has three complaints against him now, but is still working there. Plus, the management treats their workers and customers both like dirt and they are very rude. Also, they don't let people keep lockers there without paying, which makes it really hard on customers who have work and other things going on who have to drag large bags everywhere because of this. Plus, they made me sign a contract so I can't leave if I want. It seems like and OK place at first but it's not. STAY AWAY!

NYSC-Bureaucratic and money hungry nightmare

Bureaucratic and money hungry nightmare-Oct 03 '06

I went in to sign up for a one year contract, two months before my contract was to expire I found out that my salesman had signed me up for a two year contract without my knowledge. After being promised that he would end the contract at the time I expected it to, I was told by management that I should lie to a doctor to get a note excusing me from my contract instead of just having it annulled as I was told it would. I finally got the promise of it being cancelled only to find out that I had been charged for the month following my 'cancellation' and that it had never actually been done. The club's locations are the best thing about it -- you can find a similarly sterile atmosphere and unhelpful staff at other places for a lower monthly fee.

Another satisfied member at NYSC

I went in to the affiliate Boston Sports Club in Central Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts. [New York Sports Club is part of a chain of clubs, doing business variously as NYSC, BCS, PSC and WSC. Just go to http://www.nysc.com/ and see how you can click on any of those logos to change websites.] "How much for a month-to-month membership?," I asked. "Let me call a sales representative," said the girl at the desk. "I don't want to talk to a sales representative. I just want to know how much a month-to-month membership costs." "I don't have that information here," she replied. "It changes so frequently that I couldn't guarantee its accuracy." Bull***t, I thought, but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. "Okay, let me talk with a sales representative," I said. "I'll call him," she said. Then she pushed a form across the desk at me. "I need you to fill out this form." "I don't want to fill out any forms," I replied. "I used to sell houses. I know what you're doing. You're trying to get me used to filling out forms for you, so its easier to sell me a membership." A minute later, the sales representative shows up. "I am interested in a month-to-month membership." That was a mistake. I should have asked, "How much for a month-to-month membership?" It was a mistake because it allowed him to reply without giving information. "We can do that for you," he said. "Let me give you a tour of the facilities." Then he looked over at the blank form. "I'll need you to fill out the form." "I'm not filling out any form and I don't want a tour. I just want to know how much for a month-to-month membership." "Fill out the form!," he commanded, at which point I thanked them, excused myself and left.

NYSC-THE BOTTOM LINE:

Don't actually expect there to be any action taken on your behalf. Or to get any help. Even if you apply to the parent company. They're delighted to take your money every month, but that's where they think their responsibilities end.

NYSC/TSI

Thievery and bureaucratic incompetence abound

I have been a member of the NYSC for approximately 3 years now. I have visited 3 different branches in the midtown NYC area regularly and have had items missing/stolen from 2 of them as follows:

1 - had locker and laundry service, one day my clothes (including a brand-new pair of Adidas track pants) went out and a random bag of (male) clothes was returned to me. Club disavowed any knowledge or input on laundry, what goes in or what comes out. Was a nice service while it lasted though.

2 - Three days after I initiated the laundry service, a brand-new pair of sneakers went missing. Front desk sent me to housekeeping staff, housekeeping found one of them in the cleaning closet, the other one never appeared. I had a bit of a language barrier issue with the housekeeping staff, though they were extremely nice, and of course the front desk worker who told me to go ask the housekeeper did not volunteer to ask her any questions on my behalf, or even to walk me back and point out the housekeeper to me. Just "go in the locker room and look for her". Because I assumed no one would steal one sneaker, went back to front desk, who averred they had no other hiding places for missing items. However, when I handed them an extra sock that I'd been given from the laundry service, they opened a random cupboard behind their desk and threw it in there. What else was in there, I have no idea. Maybe my second sneaker. But if you ask them, mind, they have no other storage places or any lost and found, absolutely everything that's found goes into the housekeeping closet with the bleach and mops. Except that sock I guess.

3 - went to second branch for session with trainer, someone stole my raincoat out of the locker room. No one returned a coat, so was not taken by mistake, and when I asked if I could post a sign asking if someone had taken it by mistake, I wasn't permitted, because that's against policy, naturally.

4 - went to same branch again, this time I had my lock clipped and my wallet stolen, along with another woman who had the same type of lock. As a result of our losses, my club had no problem posting official New York City Police reminder bulletins prominently in the locker room areas of the club, reminding people *generally* to watch their stuff in the locker rooms. Naturally they have no problem posting these, because it's protective for the club. But you can't post a sign offering a reward for the return of items that are actually stolen. Because then the members would see that these posters aren't just theoretical warnings by a kindly police force looking out for your best interests, but that they were placed as a result of a specific theft or thefts that already happened, and that would be a negative for the club. As for the resolution of these issues, they were actually helpful in the case of the stolen wallet, and promptly called police and offered me the use of their office to cancel any outstanding cards. Unfortunately, this included the same credit card on which my gym fees were billed, and you have to fill out an entirely new form every time your credit card expires or is stolen, you can't just hand the card to someone and have them do it on-screen. Sometimes they'll even make you see a sales manager to change the card, and this particular sales manager had to be told twice that the reason I had to hand her a new card was because my old one was stolen right out from under their noses in this very gym branch. Even when I finally managed to get this point across to her, she had very little reaction, maybe because they think kindness or sympathy = potential liability. The front desk workers were very kindly and sympathetic in this case, but of course they can afford to be as they don't have any actual power.

In the case of the missing laundry/sneakers, I complained to the sales manager who sold me my membership, who said I had to speak to the general manager of that gym branch. Who was never in. I had to apply to the same sales manager three times before he actually conveyed my message to the general manager, the excuse being that the GM was in the middle of a personal issue and wasn't in the gym that often (!). When the GM finally made contact, he said I should bring him my receipts for the stolen items and that the gym would reimburse me. Of course he was only in the gym during the hours I was in work, so I squandered one lunch hour running over there, and when I had had no response within 6 weeks, I called again and when I found him he said that he had lost the receipts and could I bring them again. This time I wasted half a personal day, only to find out that when I got there he was "too busy" to see me, so fobbed me off on the assistant manager. Who took my receipt again. And, apparently, promptly "lost" it again. I never saw that money. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the policy was never to reimburse people for stolen items, since they have no liability after all. Except for the fact that when I couldn't get to see the GM in the flesh I sent a certified mail, return receipt requested letter to the headquarters of Town Sports International (their parent company) outlining the problem. They wrote back claiming to have alerted the GM (I had cc-ed him on the original letter) and that he would be available at any time to reimburse me. If the policy is not to offer any reimbursement, ever, that should've been said up front by the people at headquarters in their response. "We are not liable for lost or stolen items placed in our care, and we're not liable for what happens with the laundry service because they're an outside contractor, so sorry, you won't be getting reimbursed." But no one ever did. They gave me a lot of lip service and then stonewalled me into giving up. They also have a seriously unhelpful web site. I tried to log in using my barcode number to access the Member Services section - because of course, after all this, I couldn't wait for my membership term to be up so that I could say farewell to these yokels forever - only to be told I didn't actually have a valid membership (which is certainly a lie, they charge me every month until my contract runs out). When you manage to burrow through the layers to find an actual address to send your cancellation request to (the contract you sign doesn't have this information either), you discover that the people on the website haven't cared enough to include the city, state, or zip code in the mailing address section of the FAQs. Nice! And of course you must cancel via snail mail, you can't do it by email. As for the equipment/facilities, whichever branch I decided to attend just so happened to decide that this would be their time to remodel their locker rooms. I specifically asked beforehand at my home club whether or not I would need to move the items out of my permanent locker in the locker room, or if I would be able to access it during the remodeling. I was informed that I would certainly be able to get into my locker, no problem (I even pointed out which one it was when I asked the question.) Well, they were as clueless about what would actually happen with the locker-room remodeling as they were with stolen items, because the first day I got there, of course I found out that the MEN were going to be housed in the locker room where my permanent locker was. So a male employee had to be drafted to go in and drag all my stuff out of my locker

NYSC!!!!

Yet- Another happy member....
This complaint is about NYSC. Back to April 14, I went to NYSC located on 34 West and 14th St, New York, and I signed up for one year membership. At the front desk a lady escorted me to the sales associate who took care of me, he offered me a membership for one year at the monthly fee of $85.85, which I accepted, and signed the contract. After I signed up for the membership, and went through all the frustrated situation such: bad information, bad service from the trainers, wrong physical check (the trainer told me that I suffered from highblood pressure, which was false, I had to bring a letter from my Dr. stating that I was in good health conditions), victim of thief in the locker rooms ( I tried to documented and they told me that they don't use lost items forms), and other situation that doesn't worth being mention here; I continued with my membership. After certain period of time and due the fact of my job ( I didin't have time to go to the Gym, and not being satisfied for the GYM, my co-worker found in the Internet a better contract with this GYM fro $61.00) I decided to transfer my membership to my best friend (..I almost lose him for this), my suprise was when I was doing the transfer to my friend, the same sales associate that enrolled me, he charged me $29.00 for the processing fee..this wasn't in the contract, I complaint, and showed him copy of the contract where state that " I also understand that my membership is transferable" but doesn't say that will be a charge for this, after complaint I refused to pay for the "hidden" charge, the sales representative told me "If you don't pay we will take you to the Court" What??? now I will go to the court for complaint.. I was so upset that I told him "OK right charge me" and I ended up paying the $29.00 and the guy told me "If I were you I will hire a lawyer because what the GYM is doing is not legal" ; Now an employee of this GYM is giving an advice and confirming that NYSC is not a serious company. On March 03/2005 my friend called to NYSC billing department -1800-606- 0808 and spoke to an associate to confirm that his membership was due on Apr 14/2005. The associate confirmed the date of the expiration of the membership, and offered him if he wanted to cancel. My friend told him that he will cancel the membership by mail, as they directed on the contract and another surprise, the agent told him " If you send the letter, even certified, they will not process your cancellation" my friend was so confused that asked why, and he said " The best way is to cancel by phone, due the lack of organization in this company, I recommend you to do it by phone and the cancellation confirmation will be mailed to you" Here is, another employee talking bad against NYSC, my friend told him " Guy If I were you I'll quit and I'll start look for another job" which he responded " Don't worry sir that's what I'am doing", well my friend admited that this agent was honest and he followed his advice. These are the reason that we won't recommend NYSC as a company to make business nor trainiing with; hidden charges, bad customer service, no safe place, unloyal employees and many , many things that makes NYSC deserve the name " New York Sh.. Club", my recommendation "DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY"
Have a Nice Day!

NYSC/TSI

Harassment, Breach of Contract, Discrimination.

Location: NYSC on E. 76th
Staff Member: Charles Richie, GM
Date: Thanksgiving 2006
Time: 10:30

My fiancé, who has been a member of your gym for 12 years, finally persuaded me to go train with her at NYSC, since I did not have to work today. I was refused entry because I am a well known Fitness professional, and due to my occupation, I made it clear that I had no intention of training her and that I just was going to train myself. This is flat out discrimination. At this point I activated the recording feature on my smart phone.

Due to this bizarre argument/debate at the front desk my 5’ tall fiancé called the manager, Charles Richie, who she never had seen before an A-Hole. suddenly Charles Richie became belligerent, demanded her card , yelling obscenities, created a scene, yelled that that she was no longer a gym member and kicked us out. can someone spell ROID RAGE?

She then asked for his business card, he refused. It took a 10 MINUTES just to get his name, he refused us a pen to write it down and called the police to the gym. This was embarrassing to NYSC members, my fiance and myself- clearly NOT a proud moment for NYSC/TSI. No arrests were made, because this is a civil matter.

  • I am shocked that I was discriminated based on my line of work. What’s next? Nurses can’t workout at NYSC, no construction workers, no Jews?

  • I am amazed that my fiancé was verbally abused and a scratch by manager Charles Richie ( NYSC GM) during his feeble attempt to physically take the card from her person.

  • I have reviewed the TSI code, after what I witnessed, and tape recorded clearly shows that the manager of NYSC at E. 76th Street, and TSI exhibited behavior that was harassing, unethical, unlawful and far from professional.

  • What kind of general MANager swears at a 5' woman, who is a 12 year member?

I have since contacted several departments at TSI (the mother company of all NYSC), and of course was passed around, and nothing has been resolved with her membership or my civil rights. I wil update you on the results.

IF ANYONE HAS EXPERIENCED SIMILAR BEHAVIOR FROM NYSC OR OTHER FITNESS FACILITIES, HERE IS THE PLACE TO SPEAK UP!

IF YOUR CIVIL RIGHTS WERE VIOLATED, LET ME KNOW, THIS WILL MAKE A BEAUTIFUL CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT!
